I'm Mark Dawson

I’m an Instructional Designer/ Trainer. Born in Jasper Alberta, presently in living in BC and I work in both Alberta and BC. I love to help people understand and/or gain confidence to do things they didn't think they could!

The long answer...

I started out teaching in schools with Trickster theatre for many years before becoming an instructional designer and building my own training company for adult learners. I have spent over a decade with Inrol creating engaging learning experiences to help individuals and teams gain skills and adapt to new technologies and processes. My passion lies in making complex concepts, interactions, and software systems accessible - empowering learners with the tools they need to excel in their roles.

I have worked with diverse individuals in diverse industries, including healthcare, retail, municipal government, and provincial government. I have designed and facilitated training programs that address different learning styles, skill levels, and technical backgrounds - healthcare professionals navigating the intricacies of electronic medical records   to retail staff mastering new point-of-sale systems.

Whether delivering virtual training, leading in-person workshops, or developing blended learning solutions, my approach is grounded in practicality, creativity, and continuous improvement. I use a suite of tools such as Adobe Captivate, Articulate 360, Camtasia, and Powtoon to build interactive courses, explainer videos, and live-simulations that keep learners engaged.

The Process:

Designing effective learning experiences is what I do well, and I use ADDIE (Analysis, Develop, Design, Implement, Evaluate) as a base. Here’s how I’ll work with you to create courses that achieve your goals:

‍Understand Your Vision. Together we'll
- Get a sense of your learners, what they are good at and what they need to learn.
- Outline clear learning objectives. We can use backwards design/Action mapping to solidify what actions you are looking for them to perform. We'll also consult with your SMEs for input.
- Decide on approaches Video? E-learning? VILT? A combination?
- Create a realistic timeline for development.
Develop the Content
‍I’ll dive into your subject matter and start to create, ensuring the content is accurate, engaging, and aligned with learning objectives. This includes:
- Breaking down complex topics into clear, digestible chunks.
- Writing scripts, lessons, or materials with a learner-first mindset.
- Finding and starting to incorporate visuals or examples to make the content stick.
Bring It to Life
‍This is where the course takes shape! I’ll design and build interactive, visually appealing modules by:
- Prototyping lessons or activities for your feedback.
- Developing/ adding multimedia like videos, animations, or interactive quizzes where required.
Ensuring the course is enjoyable and meets the learning objectives.
Launching, Evaluating, and Supporting:
‍When the course is ready, I’ll make sure it’s implemented smoothly. I can also help you:
- Deliver the course to your learners (via an LMS or other format).
- Track results and learner engagement.
- Make updates or adjustments based on performance and/or feedback.
